Custom moulded ear plugs cheap

Ok being skint and loving loud cans can have it's draw packs at time like on longer journeys so fancied trying a cheaper alternative to those uber expensive moulded ear plugs and something better than the 50p disposable ones, the £100 self mould ones and the £300 blingety mo fo's

After searching around I found an ebay seller selling two part non-toxic, hypo-allergenic blah blah silicone  cost me £4 posted
Seller isn't selling this stuff any more (I asked) for this looks very similar or i'm sure some searching will find something slightly cheaper or R&G and alpine have brought a kits out for about £20 for the silicon.

Next I went to my local supermarket and picked up some of those Jelly head phones with the removable head for about £2.50 I think
Again quick ebay search, more searching will find you cheaper in cheaper

so found some instructions on youtube for the basic ear plugs moulding
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6w5hclSlRsY

My basic instruction are

Kit needed
two part non-toxic silicon
Head phones with removable ends
Mirror
Scalpel
something about 40mm to hold your jaw open (optional)

1) Clean your Ears
2) Wash your hands
3) separate the blue into 4/2 depending how much you have (keep colours separate)
4) separate white/yellow into 4/2 depending how much you have (keep colours separate)
5) take on piece of each colour and mould in your hand until there is no streak and it's completely mixed
I put a little tub that is 40mm in my mouth to hold open my jaw, this can give a better fit according to some people, if you do have some tissue handy and you will slobber like a dog later in the moulding time)

6) Roll it into a ball and stick it in your ear
Image
7) keep pushing and folding extra in until is in your ear canal and smooth to your ear, your not trying to reach your brain so don't ram it in there but make sure you fill the canal, give you ear a tug about so it sits inside your ear so to speak, I mirror is very helpfull at this stage
Image
Image
8) once you are happy you have the putty far enough in your ear and a smooth surface don't talk or move your jaw and sit there for 10 minutes minimum
9) carefully remove the ear plug in a twist out motion, this is weird at first but does get easier after the first time
10) relax your jaw if you have had it open, mop up slobber and get ready to the second ear, put the one you have done out the way for 3 hours to completely cure.
11) repeat on other ear.

you should now have a pair of custom ear plugs (they will need a wash)
and the rest of the silicon and ear plugs ready for the next stage

Next I moulded some more but inserted head phones into the ear plug for those long journeys when a little music is needed

1) remove the little rubber end caps of the head phones
2) Follow the previous steps up to and including step 7
3) insert the head phones into the silicon ensuring the are pushed in properly so they don't stick out and the wire comes out at the right angle
Image
4) adjust the silicon around the head phone to hold it in place
5) once you are happy you have the head phone in correctly and silicon moulded around don't talk or move your jaw and sit there for 10 minutes minimum
6) carefully remove the ear plug in a twist out motion, this is weird at first but does get easier after the first time
Image
7) relax your jaw if you have had it open, mop up slobber and get ready to the second ear, put the one you have done out the way for 3 hours to completely cure.
8) plug your headphone into your mp3 player and start playing music
8) use a scalpel to dig down to the end of the head phone, ideally remove the minimum amount of silicon possible with a round hole to the head phone speaker, if this is not possible slice down to find the end of the speaker.
9) smooth off any rough edges so not to scrape the inside of your ear

when you first put these in there cold, as they warm up they soften a little and mould into your ear nicely, They are comfortable and do a good job with reducing noise and for about £6.50 for two sets including head phones i'm very happy, takes a bit of getting used to putting them in but gets easier every time.

Don't do this if you have/had an ear infection or cold in the week before you stuff it in your ear. And like Carlos said, don't ram it in like you're deflowering a virgin, it will irritate the inner ear. Other than that, good write up.
