Brake thoughts please

Ok heres the deal. The other day I hit a pot hole not a small one either. Immediately I lost all pressure in my rear brakes so had not. I then relised they wer getting really very hot. I replaced my pads as they seemed to be binding very slightly and this wore them down.

Anyway wheel turns freely BUT brakes are still getting very hot and I lose pressure now and again. Im going to change my brake fluis today but does this sound like the brake pedal needs adjustment as there still aeems a very light drag with thw rear brakes

Re: Brake thoughts please

Pistons in the brake calliper might need a good clean Matt, otherwise the disk might be warped - unusual on a rear disk.... somebody more knowledgeable will be along in a minute.

Re: Brake thoughts please

if u overfill the rez, when ya brakes get warm and the fluild expands , its got no where to expand too....only place is the calipers and it'll push ya pistons out....

Re: Brake thoughts please

As said clean the pistons, stick a large spanner between the pistons and press the pedal to expose more of the pistons so u can give them a good clean, the thick spanner should stop the pistons popping all the way out and give u enough gap to push them back in. Also have a check to see if tue dust seal is pushed out as old dust seals and dirty pistons dont mix and it pulls the dust seal out with the piston and causes the piston to jam and not release, this will cause the binding

Re: Brake thoughts please

Cheers mate. If dust seal has pushed out is it worth just taking it off for the time being until I get around to an overall in a couple of weeks when front brakes etc are being done?

Re: Brake thoughts please

No !!!!
The dust seal stops your brake fluid getting contaminated and also keeps it behind the pistons !!!

Dust seals just keep the crap of the main seal. I ran my trackbikes with no dust seals, you so much more feel.

I would not do it long term on the road though.

Re: Brake thoughts please

Think im goin to have to go for a new caliper. Took it off cleaned down back on the bike and went out the discs still bloody hot and lose brake pressure.

I think whats happening is the piston is jamming ( I had hell of a job getting it in) pad is dragging disc gets bloody hot brake fluid boils and I lose rear brakes. After minute or so they come back after air settles again.

Anyone else have an idea?
